This week, we were tasked with creating a Block Print. Since it was still dark out and too cold, we took a photo from the internet. I chose this flower, we then had to put a filter on it to more the black's and white's clearer. As with most of our projects, we uploaded it into an iPad app and traced the black and white's. We weren't doing gray. After tracing, outlining, and shading where the black's and white's are, we drew it on a piece of paper. Finally, for this part of the project, we transferred it to the block.
As of right now, we're working on texture using Calligraphy pens and ink.
These are two different drawings of the same flower using the same technique, the first one with the initials KA in the corner is the first I did and the second one is more a quick sketch I did after.
Rubric:
I can make an drawing from a photograph by representing the big shapes accurately by close observation from the source - by looking ‘like a scientist’ I would give myself a five on this. I represented the general shape of the flower well.
I can fill up the entire rectangle so there is more figure/motif than negative/background space. There is more figure/motif than there is negative or background space for the most part, so I give myself a four on this one.
I can use value - as observed from the source - to describe the surfaces accurately - drawing what can be observed and not what we ‘think’ we see. The value might not be super defined but there is value and it's from what I've observed, but I would give myself a five because there is value.
I can use a wide variety of line styles, including contour lines, cross hatching, stippling and textured lines with an entire range of values. I used a variety of lines and used majority of the texture lines to create a range of values but I used mostly cross hatching. I would give myself a four on this.
I can create edges by changes in value and not just outlining. sometimes the background will be lighter than the motif and sometimes darker. At first I created edges by outlining, but then I went back in and created a change in value instead of just darkening the edge. I would give myself a five on this because even though I didn't get it at first, I went back in and adjusted it.
