Right from the beginning you can tell that it is a sad song, the sound of the music sets the scene as sad, depressing, and unfortunate before the lyrics even started . Then the lyrics come, once you make the realization that the "strange fruit" is humans it becomes more of an emotional song. When the singer says "southern trees bear strange fruit" you realize that it is about black people being hung, she confirms this when she says "black bodies swingin'....".

At the moment, I am having difficulty expressing how this song made me feel... I felt disappointed in my race for being that cold hearted and close minded to the point where they shot fear into a different skin-colored human just by looking at them.
