This is the plate I made last week, probably finished footing it on Friday. I believe it should be fired either today (Feb. 9) or tomorrow (Feb. 10). I noticed after it was already drying/dried that it had a bump around the center and wasn't completely smooth. For a my first plate it is pretty good. It's a pretty small plate, but I like it. I plan on painting a design on it rather than have it be just one color. I'm not positive what I'm going to do though, whether I should splatter it or use multiple colors and just paint some design on it.
Today I made a planter, it is a little small and too thick in some places as well as off-center. But I think for my first planter its pretty good. When I was footing it, it flew off the wheel and it cracked a little bit. I should be fired either today (Feb. 9) or tomorrow (Feb. 10) and then it will be painted. I'm going to try painting it too different colors. I wonder if I could try spattering paint at it or making the paint look like it drips down to the color that would be on the bottom. Same as with the Vase #2, I forgot to take pictures of my progress. It should be done firing tomorrow and on my grading blog. I'm going to try to make a bigger cup, the one I have now looks like a little tea cup (not that there is anything wrong with that), I just want to make something bigger. The handle looks a little off, I think I did it wrong. I talked to a friend in the class and she showed me how we're supposed to do it. Now, I know for next time! The design is hearts and lines between them around the rim, hopefully these won't run because of the white base.
When trying to make a close-lidded project, I actually made a vase that was bigger than my other one. I decided to keep in and work on a close-lidded project another day. This one basically looks like the one I made in ceramics class, just a little smaller because it shrunk in the bisque. I do not have any picture, it is being fired right now and will be out tomorrow and then on my grading blog.
*I've found that it's difficult for me to remember to take pictures of the progress of my project. Usually my hands are covered in clay and I don't want to get it on my phone and then the next day I'm focused on whatever I have left to do. I'm going to work on this and hopefully have more photos on my working blog! This is a bowl I made after school, this picture was taken before I foot it and right after I finished taking it off the wheel. I made it a little to thin to foot it like I normally would so I did basically a small foot, if that makes sense. A lot of the stuff I'm making so far are very small, but hopefully as the semester goes on I'll get better on making them bigger. As of right now, I have yet to make a successful vase. The ones I do make are so small and will shrink once fired, or they end up cracking from being so thin.
I get the general idea of how to make a vase, I just need to work on making a big vase. Each I make is tiny, and could be considered a small cup. Sure, I could keep them and use them as a cup or put a single flower in them but as said before, they'll shrink. Today (Feb.4), I worked on footing my other bowl I made and once I finished a very quick and not perfect in any way foot, I tried to start on either another bowl or vase. I'm not sure what was happening, but for whatever reason I was having trouble bringing up the sides, and then on another project my center wasn't flat. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it was like a spiral staircase just without the stairs. I think I was having the wheel move too fast and for whatever reason couldn't control it today, I got distracted, and then had to start over. I should be careful to not get distracted because its quite easy for a simple, small mistake to ruin the entire project. Since I'm considering the bowl I have now to be my first bowl, I'll be working strictly on creating my tall project (vase). Unless what I'm making ends up looking more like a bowl than anything. I think, if I create something small I might keep it for a pencil holder or something like that, I can work my way up to having a very tall one. As of Feb. 6, I'll be working on creating a new bowl and will have to come back to the vase once I finish that. I'll probably begin the vase either Monday or Tuesday. I spent the first couple days of the new class working on techniques. For the most part, I understand centering, pulling up the sides, and taking it off of the bat. I haven't tried footing yet though. That would be my next step for this bowl.
But, I'm debating whether I want to try and make a new bowl. Once fired, my bowl will shrink and it already is quite tiny. I already have a really small bowl at home that I made in ceramics club. I'm thinking that after school I'm going to come in and try to make a better bowl. If I'm unable to, I will keep the one I have and foot it. So I've decided to just keep this bowl for now. It was good practice for footing. I get the general idea but because it was so dry it was probably harder than footing with usually be. I'm not extremely proud of this bowl, but as said before, I'm in ceramics club and have other bowls to make in the actual class. I have plenty of time to work on getting better. I'll be looking at it again tomorrow, adjusting a few things if possible, and then putting it on the shelves to be fired so I can paint. Depending on the colors available, I'll probably pick some shade of blue or a turquoise color. So, the bowl I had made was too dried out to do anything more to it or fix it. I worked on creating another one, it was going well. It was probably the best one I've made so far. But it was still a little off center, I went to fix it and it begun to crack a bit so I put a bag over and will see Monday (Feb. 8) if I'm able to fix it. This is just a post that marks where ceramics post ends and my intermediate art work starts.
Here is the sketch for my final draft, I'm still not completely positive whether I want to use colored pencils, paints (acrylic/watercolor). or if I want to use oil pastels. The circle down at the bottom is supposed to represent me, the curved lines coming from it represent the memories. I've decided against using people, it would be too figurative and it looked strange. There's some background space but I figure I can put a color back there that will make the rest of the motif really pop. This week, we were tasked with creating a Block Print. Since it was still dark out and too cold, we took a photo from the internet. I chose this flower, we then had to put a filter on it to more the black's and white's clearer. As with most of our projects, we uploaded it into an iPad app and traced the black and white's. We weren't doing gray. After tracing, outlining, and shading where the black's and white's are, we drew it on a piece of paper. Finally, for this part of the project, we transferred it to the block. |
